Bedrest or Cerclage

#1

Hello Everyone.

I decided to start the thread on bedrest/cerclage because I wanted to share my bedrest experience. I am currently 14 weeks and had a cerclage placed 3 days ago. I had pre term labor at 21 weeks before without warning so the cerclage- a cervical simple stitch on the cervix is giving us hope.Usually this is done for incompetent cervix or short cervix, which  right now is not my case but better safe than sorry.

So I am on bedrest for 12 weeks until 3rd trimester. It is not strict because I can go to bathroom, shower, and microwave food. I am only allowed to be on my feet no more than 15 minutes at a time.

If you are going on bedrest, are on bedrest, or may need a cerclage, feel free to post away.

Blessings to everyone with their beans.:flower:

I’m not on bedrest but I may need a clerage. I’m having another cervix check next week to see if I will need one.

I hope your time on bedrest goes by quickly!

Thanks

Nelly,

Congrats.Thanks. I hope your cervix cooperates and listens. I have to create a schedule of “to do list everyday” so that I have stuff to look forward to.

DH is on go team so in and out of town. Looking into a doula to come by house or some type of house help.

Is bedrest neccessarily required with a cerclage?

My OB and RE were both talking cerclage befor I ever even got pg … one previous late-term loss and too many to count surgeries and procedures done through the cervix since then has left my cervix very “loose”.

I don’t want to jeopardize this pregnancy in any way, so I’ll do what it takes, but 14 weeks of bedrest doesn’t not sound like fun … not to mention that it would be the end of my job.

Not Necessarily Bedrest For All that Long

Long,

That is wonderful that they have considered a cerclage with you before pg. No you don’t have to be on bedrest like me they have strict, modified, and both. Some women do desk work after a couple of weeks of cerclage placement.

I had a 2nd term pre labor loss late and my OB is very aggressive because of other blood issues. I will say that you must be on almost strict the 1st week or 2 no driving, heavy lifting, and standing. If you have an emergency cerclage where the cervix shortens to about 1 cm then you will probably be on bedrest at home like me.
The cerclage is a preventive measure for me. I think with your surgery history I would get one before you start contracting or shortening. They like to see you get to 24 wk-27 wks but letting resume normal activities. The purpose of cerclage is to prolong viability.

Work- It qualifies under FMLA. You can take FMLA for prenatal care by law. You are protected for 12 wks at least, then again 6 to 8 wks after delivery. Don’t worry.
Your bean is #1 right now. There is also unemployment benefits.
State Unemployment Insurance Benefits, Employment & Training Administration (ETA) - U.S. Department of Labor

I was worried about work but then I took a deep breath and said I have savings to cover a few months and we will make it work out. At this point it was not worth risking the cervix to open on its own.

Good Luck.

Take care and blessings to your bean.

Hi EsperanzaFL ~ I had a cerclage 15 days ago and was on bedrest for 2-3 days. My MFM has suggested me to work from home because that allows me to rest with my legs up and recline on a sofa. I am still working out the arrangements in my office. But as of now working 4 days weeks in front of a computer. Last check, my cerclage looked good and in place. Hope my manager allows me to wfh 4 or 5 days a week or planning to go on disability leave.

This is my end of cerclage story.
Good luck to you and also to me…

Take Care

Hi Waiting,

Good for you! Yes I still email and take care of things at home. I hope that everything works out at work with the arrangement. I know its hard to make arrangements because I always feel like I have forgotten something on my to do list at work.:flower:
I am hoping when I get to 3rd tri I can go back part time until delivery.

Keep in touch, okay. Your in my thoughts and prayers.

Cupcake Cravings!

So today I cheated the bedrest part. I made cupcakes while sitting down at the kitchen table.

Okay so it started out as a headache, then I went back to sleep after talking to DH on a wonderful time zone where the sun was already up at 12:00am EST but that is the least of my troubles.I took a cat nap and my mouth started to salivate :woohoo: at the thought of chocolate cupcakes. So I caved in and whoah. I got the ingredients which where all on the counter and then sat down for a few minutes. Then I got the eggs and milk out of fridge. and then I sat down for 10 mins. Then I got the bowl and mixer. Sat down for another 10 minutes. Then I mixed the ingredients. and sat another few minutes. Made 6 jumbo nestle tollhouse cupcakes:woohoo: . Even though it took me an hour to prepare it was worth it! I am loving every bite as I type. As for the reflux, I already took my Nexium so I should be good to go!:flower:

The end of a pregnant woman and her cravings. Back to the bedrest thing.

15 weeks yeah!

So another food dream. Woke up this morning wanting potatoe salad and barbecue chicken. And I could just taste it.hmmm good. You guessed it the potatoes(without eggs) are on the stove right now and chicken in oven-well marinated seseme orange chicken. The Bar B Q scares me because of my gas.
But when reality set in I had gas still from yesterday’s binge of chocolate cupcakes. I never thought a bm could just be gas. :woohoo: I can taste the carbon dioxide gas in my mouth(strange hugh). I left my Maalox at work. So I guess I will have to look up home remedies for now the heartburn.Yogurt is not good my dr said because it soothes but the milk still causes more gas?

Okay later

Tmi

Okay first of all this morning, I wasn’t craving any dinner food but bananas and multi grain Cheerios with my lactose milk. It was so good that I had a really good bm. When I was young mi abuela use to ask if I had a bm and I was like what???:woohoo: Everyday she would ask us. I just thought it was because she was a nurse and that was her job- and of course I thought that she was just insane! But as I journey on this pregnancy I realize that having a bm is just like striking gold- it is a joyous occasion.:flower:

What else…oh I need to work in bed today for at least 4 hours. I know I am getting short term disability that is close to take home pay (after taxes & all other deductions hit me up) but geez can I get a bonus for working on bedrest.

So tomorrow is my follow-up to cerclage and long U/S with the maternal fetal specialist. That doctor that explains the U/S is not my OB but follows the pregnancy and makes suggestions to my OB but he is very impersonal because he talks about all the what ifs instead of the positives. I will just have to treat him like Charlie Brown’s teacher. Sometimes , and maybe I am biased but men cannot feel women emotions and feelings. When they re-certify every year they should make them take bedside manners one on one. I wish I ran the medical board, I would certainly recommend it. Glad DH will be there he will speak for me because my hormones may just give him a kick where the sun doesn’t shine.:flower:

This morning I am up. Okay well I have been up at 2am watching Airplane II so hilarious. DH sounded like an elephant snoring so I started talking to him and eventually he woke up for a bit. Then I went back to take a cat nap and was dreaming about my conversation with my girlfriend and her teenagers-never again will her words get in my dream. I need to read a book or scripture before I shut my eyes because that was over the top!
The gas is coming back with a vengeance and my bm in the wee hours was 5 minutes of gas. The Nexium is $60 and that is insane. It is the prescription strength. Okay doing some computer work before my appointments in 2 hours.

Cervix Good Week 1

:flower: Cervix is good. I am very soar and crampy. The gas is kicking my butt and the bean was showing his/her butt all the exam making me laugh :). The angels are watching. Today DH and I were ready to go off on the maternal fetal specialist and the head guy was there. THANK YOU! It was a wonderful experience and I was at ease.

So venting. Why when Mamabear isn’t at work everyone wants to show out.:woohoo: Today started out as a crazy day working from home but the end of the day seeing my bean was wonderful!:flower:

Headaches on Bedrest???

Okay…woke up with stabbing headache and it felt like sinus. Weather has been 40 deg in morning then 80 during the day. So heat to air conditioning is not good. Had to take a Benedryl because I tried water for an hour and my nose started to get stuffy.
So today I had sausage gravy and eggs for breakfast…no crazy dream about dinner food.:flower:
Yesterday they said at the U/S I have an anterior placenta. And they love the place of it. I laugh because the nurses look at me like she asks a lot and knows too much. Well duh, that’s why I am on the forum to get 1st point of view and some answers.

For people on bedrest, did you get more headaches? Also the cerclage is good but I feel like sometimes I could rip it out. My OB said that I am irritated down there still from what she can see by checking the length. So thought I was going to work at 32 weeks nope.
35weeks-38 weeks. But I will negotiate that to 34 weeks. :flower: I don’t want to drive or lift anything I just want to check on my
team to make sure they are “doing right” in person. Even if that means sitting in a chair all day holding catch up meetings. Email is so impersonal and I should of put babycams everywhere to see if they are working. I feel like Ugly Betty or the Devil Wears Prada but they will try me.

The Gas is Back!

I am in so much distress with this gas. Being on bedrest doesn’t help because I am supposed to be lying down as much as I can but I feel like I can choke. I had problems with gastroparesis a couple of years ago and I think it is back. I hope that taking the PIO doesn’t make the gas get worse. I need nutrients but I also don’t need painful gas, choking, and a hard upper stomach. It’s hard to eat.
Going to see one more day then I will call OB office.

4am…The Toliet Story

Okay it really started last night before bed. Since I have been on bedrest DH has been doing the shopping. He though he was doing a good thing by not calling me and asking but I ate wheat bagels he bought and that was mistake #1. Mistake #2 came with the Provolone cheese. He bought a store brand that was so thick.:flower: Mistake #3 I had Boston Market candied yams but I don’t think that was culprit.Bless my DH little heart for trying. I know he feels bad.

So then the stomach bloating happened and last night I went like no other for about 20 mins. TMI. It really felt like a relief because the top of my stomach was so hard and I was in pain with the gas.-Haha smelled like rotten eggs and been fermenting in my tummy. So we splashed bleach and Lysol everywhere.

So 4am DH wakes up for work and I was like moving around and I had to go…it was not much but painful and my butt now is sore now. I don’t have vomitting or nausea just that burning feeling in my stomach and butt.

So I would have used the crockpot but I have decided to use the stove and sit back in bed to make chicken and broth. Looks like that’s my meal for today.

So I think we have solution to my problem.
I believe that my colitis has flared up. It has been years since I had one of those. So no wheat, less fried foods, no carbonated drinks, no tomatoes sauce and lactose only cheese. Oh the chocolate will have to be some kind of gluten free. :flower: Really gluten free diet is Since I am :preg: I cannot just go see my gastroenternologist get a colonoscopy done or take the Prednisone unless it gets unbearable and there is bleeding from the rectum. I am going to up my folic acid in take and B12 because the Nexium/antacids lowers them.

So now I feel icky and my sinus pressure is there.
I hope everyone else has a better bedrest story.

XOXO Esperanza

I’m getting my check in 2 weeks to see if I need cerclage placement. I have such bad cramps and ligament pain that I almost want it to keep my mind at ease.

I had a leep conization about 8 years ago so my cervix may be to short. We’ll see! First, we have to figure out why they found traces of blood in my urine, oh joy.

How was the placement Esperanza? Are you put out? Congrats on doing so well with sticking to bedrest, you rock!

Hi, I am Rosalyn. I have just been placed on redrest for at minimum 4 weeks, to maximum 12 weeks. I have the same worries about my job, baby, expenses. I am an assistant principal at a middle school. I have a really great district and hope we will all work out something so I can at the most receive donated time for most of the time I am out and at the least keep my job after missing about 12-20 weeks depending on me and baby staying stable. I am doing my bedrest in the hospital due to PTL risks. I have an abdominal cerclage and had a bunch of issues last year due to a 2nd trimester loss of twins and a bunch of issues after that loss, I almost dies from infection. So, I am in the best place possible and praying for the best. I am happy to be part of this group.

Hey There Missed You!

JH77,

Oh my goodness! What is going on with the blood in the urine? It could be just a kidney stone because that happened to me.Yes I had a leep also about 11 yrs ago.
but my cervix has always measured good except last year at 21 weeks something just happened. I have learned from my RE & OB the pre-term last year that infections can cause you to contract, loosen the cervix to cause pre-term labor so fast without warning. So we have become germ freaks at my house with DH working away we bleach everything.:cheer:

Yes the cerclage has put my mind at ease a little while. It is better to get one earlier at 14-20 weeks then after that because the less tissue the chances are lowered without strict bedrest such as hospitalizations. I still have discomfort but when examined she said that it is just the cerclage site and since the uterus is stretching out I am most likely feeling the wire. The other thing is that my OB says the cerclage works best with limited muscle contraction activities such as driving, housework, lifting, and bending over. Also of course no intercourse or play.:flower: I am so active but boy I am getting creative in bed:flower:.

Today just is so lousy with stomach issues but I plan on ordering a movie on demand.:flower: I think I might invest in Netflicks or something. I know I need to save but my brain needs to be at ease. Also I need to look into gallon water delivery. I want to just have it in the bedroom so I can sip warm or cold water without getting up too much.

I’ll be praying or you over the next 2 weeks.
My advice is try to do as little as you can. Keep you legs elevated a little when you sit(recliner) and if you lay down, try to lay flat. Don’t lift or bend and if you start cramping in the middle below belly button go and it hurts to walk-go to ER immediately. Don’t wait -okay.

XOXO Esperanza

Hi Rosalyn!

:welcome: :welcome: :welcome:
How are you doing? Well you have made it to 24 weeks, and that is a blessing. I am so sorry about the loss of twins last year but we both have our rainbow babies to be thankful for.

That it is my next goal. I know about the job thing trying to keep on email and making sure that your co-workers are not acting like they have lost their minds when you are away.:woohoo: Yes I was at 1st very disappointed but we had talked about it last year the OB and I about the next pregnancy. You just don’t realize when you are out how much you do at work. It is especially hard as an administrator. Yes the money factor is always haunting you but I have given my worries to someone else if you know what I mean.:flower:

PTL is no joke and thank goodness someone is paying attention to you. The hospital I wish I was there for the company and peace of mind, but I don’t know about the giving blood all the time-I have tiny rolling veins and I am a hard stick.:flower: But I am taking it one day at a time.My cerclage is in until 35 weeks which is another 20 weeks.:woohoo: 4 months.

Keep in touch and nice talking to you.Look forward to hearing all your milestones.

XOXO Esperanza

Houston We Have A Problem!

I am now experiencing water movement in my stomach and it is growling so loud. You know the noise when you have loose stools. :flower: Okay I am going to call OB early in the morning. I am going to eat some plain rice and chicken broth tonight. I don’t have like diarrhea just frequent bowels water with gas and bowels coming out.
I am constantly drinking water. Gatorade is tasting too metallic to me right now.

Good Night Forum
