Newbie! Feeling lost

#1

Howdy! I am so thankful to have found this board. I am hoping to find some support because I am starting to feel scared and alone as my husband and I embark on a new adventure of trying to have a family. I am just not sure where to go…

A little about us: I am 28 and he is 42. He had a vasectomy in 2002. We have been married for two and a half years. My husband had a reversal in November and has since become baby CRAZY!! It’s hard not to get excited…but I don’t want to get my hopes up since it had been 10 years since his vasectomy. I’m just scared.

We were referred to a specialist since Dh’s count came back low. I look healthy and the doc had no concerns. Dh has good motility and morphology…just low count. So they prescribed Clomid to increase count. The doctor was not very optimistic which was disheartening. He crossed off ICI and thought we may try IUI. I don’t know much about the process. Three months puts us at September, so we’re going to try for October cycle. I’m nervous and don’t know what to expect. I started trying to use OPK just to get to know my cycle better but have been discouraged since they haven’t showed any clear positive surges since I switched brands.

I just don’t know who to talk to. I don’t know anyone who has gone through IUI or infertility. It seems like all of my friends have no problems getting pregnant. I hope to find some support and encouragement because I am feeling lost, lost, lost…

did they do an ultrasound on your dh to check for a varicocele?

my husband had a varicocele and a low count. they are about the same age. the surgery was a success.

Are your husband’s numbers low because he has a hormone imbalance or because the vascetomy reversal wasn’t completely successful? If it’s the first then clomid could help. If it’s the latter then clomid won’t do a thing.
Also, the second urologist we went to said that you need 20 million total motile sperm for the optimal chance of success at IUI (20% rate of success per round). My husband had 5 million post-wash with a progression of 1+/2-, so IUIs were never going to work for us.

Sorry if my post is negative. It’s just that infertility is a very long process and there are a lot of bumps in the road. Not knowing the details of your situation, I can’t guarantee that you’ll be pregnant in 3 months. The best you can do is ask your doctors a lot of questions. If they don’t answer to your satisfaction, ask again and if need be, find a doctor that will answer all your questions.
Good luck :flower:

I don’t know much about your husbands situation, but I agree with what Careen said. Don’t let it get you discouraged but just make sure you ask lots of questions. I find it helps to write all my questions down and I come here so I know what questions to ask. I wish I had come here before we even started to the journey so you are already on the right track. Stay positive too - it sounds crazy but it’s amazing what it can do if you can go into the process with your head high.

Hi, sageeyedgirl; I’m new too. Are you waiting 3 months to try b/c you want the clomid to kick in?

How low is your husband’s sperm count? My husband’s has been 10 million and 6.4 million, and my RE wasn’t particularly worried about these counts (although from what I can find online, they are indeed low counts).

I never get clear surges from OPK’s either. Have you tried doing BBT? It’ll tell you for sure if you’re ovulating, although for me it got to be too stressful to keep taking my temperature. When it started disrupting my sleep, I stopped.

Anyway, good luck I hope it all goes well for you, and quickly!
