When to get FSH/LH test?

#1

Hi,

I am diagnosed with both ovaries poly cystic. My symptoms are although not as severe. My cycles never got disturbed. Acne, skin discoloration, and oily skin were the problems that irritated me. For that my specialist has asked me to get a FSH/LH ratio test.

Now I would like to know that when I should get the test? Before or after the periods.

Looking for your kind advice.

Regards,

Sorry I can’t help - I had the test done but never had my period so it didn’t seem to matter when haha.
Maybe do it right after your period so you know you’re not around the time of ovulation when you’d have an LH surge? But thats just a guess.

Maybe you can call back your specialist and ask.

Hi LizabethM,

Thanks for your response. That’s make sense.

As I said my periods are regular.
For the treatment of Acne she asked me to get the FSH/LH ratio test. So, I would like to know what that ratio reveal.

Looking forward,

Hi Zinia- It’s best to get your hormones tested on day 3 of your cycle. At this stage, LH should be low. If your LH is elevated on this day, possibly even as high as your FSH, then it suggests you may have problems with ovulation. Ovulation requires an LH surge, and if LH is already elevated, you may not surge and ovulate. I also have terribly oily skin. The oily skin can be attributed to excess androgens in your system. You should ask your doctor to test you for insulin resistance. The link between insulin resistance and PCOS has been well established, but the reason why there is a link is a mystery. It is the elevated insulin that possibly causes the elevated androgens, thus the oily skin. Also, the insulin resistance could be causing extra LH in your system if your ratio comes out irregular. I’ve been trying to learn as much as I can lately about this diagnosis as I was recently diagnosed.

Hi Violet5,

Thank you very much for your response.
Yes, my doctor has told me that I had insulin resistance problem. For that she also prescribed medications as well.

Further, she advised to get a FSH/LH ratio test.
Wouldn’t it affect the test results if its not done right on the third day.
Because I have got the test just today 19th Dec 2011.
Last time my periods came on 6th Dec 2011 and stayed about 4 days.

I am too confused what to do now?

If your doctor suggested to get it done now, then maybe there is some valuable information to gain at this point in your cycle. Everything I know about it shows that you want a 1:1 ratio on day 3. He may know that there is a specific ratio to look for at your point in your cycle. Do you know if you ovulate regularly?

I have no idea if I do ovulate, however I have got my test report now that shows that values as:

FSH = 12.100mIU/ml
LH = 70.0mIU/ml

Does it say any thing about my ovulation ?

Looking forward

Well normally when they look at that test, LH that is 2x or more greater than FSH is an indicator of PCOS - however, since you got the test done on cd 13, you may have caught an LH surge before ovulation. I might suspect that because it seems like your LH is a LOT higher than the FSH. So maybe ask about getting another test done on cd3 like violet suggested if the reason they want to look at the ratio is for PCOS.

Many thanks for your response.

First of all I would like to tel you that I AM diagnosed with PCOS 2 years ago.

My symptoms are not as severe.
My periods are regular.

My major problems are acne, oily skin and skin discoloration. For the treatment of acne, my doctor asked to get the FSH/LH ratio test.

Here the point is last time I had periods on 6 Dec 11 and got the test done on 18 Dec 11.

Does it also affect the results of test that when you got the test?

Looking for your response.

Well, since your periods are regular, if you have a 28 day cycle, taking the test on cycle day 13 would make the LH level higher because you will ovulate soon. But if I were you I’d just tell your doctor that you got the bloodwork done around the time of ovulation and see if that makes a difference in what she needs to know.
